Tim Maddison
Senior Developer · SGW & DMG products
Q: What does a typical day or week look like for you in your position?
A: My week usually involves working on our existing products (Security Gateways and Digital Maintanence Gateways), from fixing bugs to creating new features, every day varies.
Q: What’s one project that stands out as a personal favourite, and why?
A: Sqlite. It's a venerable project, with a strong team behind it, and it works so well that it enables software to be built in entirely new ways.
Q: Are there particular areas of cybersecurity that you are especially passionate about?
A: I particularly enjoy automated testing to find issues or prevent new ones from being created. Property testing and fuzzing are particularly interesting.
Q: What’s a non-tech skill or interest that’s surprisingly helped you in your career?
A: Being a scout leader has helped me with public speaking and thinking about things from different people's perspectives. Volunteering with children is also a great way to stay humble and remember what's really important in life.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in cybersecurity?
A: Don't stop being curious about all the technology you find around you, but do find a safe way to experiment with it.
