Sustainability
Technical innovation, low environmental impact
How We Reduce Our Environmental Impact
Sustainability is part of how we run the business. As a rail-focused company specialising in train cyber security, we reduce our environmental impact through the way we travel, the way we work, and the partners we choose. The sections below describe each practice.
Travel
We hold virtual meetings by default and travel only when a visit is needed. When we fly, we select routes with lower emissions, and we fly economy only. As a company established in the rail sector, we prefer trains, public transport, and car sharing, and many of our team members cycle. When a customer visit is already planned, we bring the hardware and packages with us, so no delivery firm is needed.
Remote Working
Because we work remotely, our team has no daily commute, and that reduces the CO2 emissions our workforce would otherwise generate. The effect is large: recent studies show that employees who work remotely four days a week can reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions by as much as 10%.
Paperless
Since RazorSecure was founded, we've been a global, remote, and paperless workforce. This reduces paper use, which saves trees and slows deforestation. Trees filter pollutants like carbon monoxide, while decomposing paper releases harmful greenhouse gases. Studies show even one remote, paperless worker cuts 14.7 pounds (6.7 kg) of CO2. Individual choices add up.
Cartridge Recycling
Our cartridge recycling programme fits our low paper use. Cartridges are a major source of landfill waste: they can take 1,000 years to decompose, releasing harmful materials. 350 million cartridges are discarded every year, and they damage the environment; we recycle ours.
Recycling
RazorSecure recycles and reuses wherever possible. We have processed all waste streams responsibly and repurposed every IT asset since we were founded.
Even as a remote team, we contribute. Our Operations Manager runs our central office recycling. Because members of our team belong to a local children's theatre company, she donates leftover packaging to the theatre for making props.
Energy Usage
RazorSecure works to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint. Our cloud-based infrastructure plays a large part: global IT contributes 2% of emissions, and cloud computing is projected to decrease server energy usage by 38%, which means far lower greenhouse gas emissions.
We use the digital infrastructure already fitted to trains. Our lightweight agent runs on a Virtual Machine, so no extra hardware is installed and server resources stay low.
We Meet the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard
RazorSecure has met the requirements of ISO 14001, and still does. ISO 14001 specifies the environmental management system an organisation can use to improve its environmental performance and sustainability. We have applied the requirements to all environmental aspects of our activities, products and services.
Our Partners' Commitment to Sustainability
We select our partners carefully and have sourced manufacturers within the EU who take sustainability and the environment seriously. Our suppliers design low-emission technology, which reduces power consumption and the dependency on precious resources.
We work with our suppliers to create products that fit our customers' space and infrastructure. We also keep carbon footprint in mind: our hardware is small and light, so it takes up minimal freight space and weight. RazorSecure hardware is developed in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, using eco-friendly building materials and machines operated by solar power.
